I focus on reading and writing development and impairment across cultures, languages, and scripts. Some of this work aims to understand dyslexia and dysgraphia, specific disorders of word reading and writing, respectively. Our studies currently explore reading and writing in Chinese and in English as a second language from behavioral, longitudinal, neuroscience, and (behavioral and molecular) genetics perspectives. This research is theoretically useful in distinguishing universal and specific characteristics of reading and writing acquisition. Practically, it can also suggest new ways a) to identify children at-risk for dyslexia and dysgraphia and b) to teach reading and writing more efficiently.
